About CV Editor

CV Editor is a free tool for writing, formatting and exporting a CV. There is no account to create, and your CV is never uploaded.

Why it exists

Most online CV builders ask you to sign up before you can download anything, store your work history on their servers, and then charge to remove a watermark. A CV holds a lot of personal information: your phone number, email address, where you have worked and for how long. We think you should be able to produce a good-looking one without handing all of that to a stranger.

CV Editor does the whole job on your own device. You can start from the sample, import the PDF of a CV you already have, or begin from a blank template, and export a finished PDF when you are done.

How it works

When you open the editor, your browser downloads the application once. Everything after that happens locally:

• Importing. When you open a PDF, a PDF reader built into the page extracts the text, works out which parts are your name, contact details, sections and roles, and fills in the editor. The file is read by your browser and is not sent anywhere.
• Editing. The preview is redrawn as you type, with the same layout engine that produces the final PDF, so what you see is what you will get.
• Exporting. The PDF is generated in your browser using standard PDF fonts. The text in it is real, selectable text, which matters when an employer's recruitment system reads your CV automatically.
• Saving. Your work is kept in your browser's local storage so it is still there next time. You can also download a data file to move your CV to another device or keep a backup.

You can check this yourself. The editor's own code makes no network requests after the page has loaded: open your browser's developer tools, watch the Network tab while you import, edit and export, and the only traffic you will see comes from the advertising described below.

How it is funded

CV Editor is free to use and is supported by advertising served by Google AdSense. Ads are shown around the editor and on these pages. As on any ad-supported website, Google's ad code runs in the page, but we never send your CV to Google or to anyone else.
